Hyperboreans recognized heroes as those warriors who had single-handedly vanquished monsters. Each of five Hyperboreans, Actaeon, Ceyx, Minos, Nisus, and Pyramus, had accomplished this feat. They defeated one sea serpent, two griffins (whose bodies were lions and head and wings were eagles) and two chimaeras (whose foreparts were lions and hindparts were dragons).

All Hyperboreans are either Sororeans, who always speak truthfully; Nororeans, who always speak falsely; Midroreans, who make statements that are alternately truthful and false; or those few Outliers who do not abide by the land's traditions. How truthful an Outlier's statements are is unknown, except that they are not the same as those who are Sororeans, Nororeans, or Midroreans. As to the five heroes, little is known of their standards of veracity, except that one of them, and only one, is an Outlier.

4. Pyramus defeated a chimaera.

Pyramus:

1. Nisus defeated a sea serpent.
2. Minos is a Midrorean.
3. Actaeon is not a Nororean.
4. Ceyx defeated a chimaera.
