Cloverfield is by far the most unique movie thus far in 2008. There were very few details released to the public, beginning with only a small teaser trailer and not even an official title. However, after watching the movie, it is clear why they did so - not for the hype but because giving away too much would spoil it. The movie itself is filmed similarly to the Blair Witch Project with shaky-camera so those with motion-sickness should be aware prior to watching this movie.
I won't bother with trying to explain the story, it's really up to the audience to figure it out. Suffice it to say, big monster and chaos. The special effects are stunning and very realistic. Also, at any given time, you do not know more than what the characters in the movie know. It pulls you into the movie, like you're actually there yourself. There are many small things you'll have to keep an eye out for to have true appreciation of the movie. Subtle hints such as time, objects, sounds, etc. are all useful to piece as much as you can together.
Cloverfield is definitely worth a watch if you can stomache it. I'd give it an 8/10.
Pros:
- Intense horror film
- Special effects are excellent
- Believable characters
Cons:
- May cause motion-sickness
- Details may sometimes be too subtle
- Many questions left unanswered
